Alma, Kansas
Several days ago my girlfriend saw the weather forecast for today; sunny with a high in the 60’s. She thought we should ride someplace in the Flint Hills for lunch. I did some map checking and internet research and we decided on Alma, with lunch at Deb’s Restaurant.
We left home at 10:50 am and rode west through De Soto, Eudora, and Overbrook, past a Bison ranch, through Scranton and Burlingame to Alma. It was 50 degrees when we left home and 64 when we arrived in Alma. The weather gods also blessed us with very little wind, a rarity in Kansas.
There were a boat load of other motorcyclists taking advantage of the beautiful unseasonable weather on this fine Thursday. I’m surprised there are so many retired people in the world !
We had lunch at Deb’s Restaurant. My internet research told us their fried chicken was good so we gave it a try. It was LARRAPIN good. And the pieces were good sized, unlike the pigeon-sized pieces of chicken we had at the Riverhouse Restaurant in Atchison last Saturday. Their home-made pie was also delicious. We shared a piece of coconut cream and, fortunately, Chris did not eat her share.
Alma had some neat looking stone buildings built in the late 1800’s. One building on Missouri Avenue was built in 1887 and a stone church was built in 1897. I guess this is appropriate since Alma is on the Native Stone Scenic Byway (http://www.ksbyways.org/ksbyways.org/native_stone).
From Alma we rode north on Hwy 99 to Wamego, a stretch of road I had not ridden before. At Wamego we turned east on Hwy 24.
Just east of Saint Mary’s the odometer on my Wing turned over 109,000. By the time we hit Topeka it was 70 degrees and the moon was visible in the eastern sky. It was around 3:00 pm with blue clear skies.
We stopped for gas in Lawrence before motoring on home. We rode 245 miles in absolutely beautiful weather . . . . . . on January 5th. Is life great or what?
