Cottonwood Falls with the Cousins
Saturday; May 28
This is the third Memorial Day Weekend in a row that we've met our McCreight cousins (on my Dad's side of the family) in Cottonwood Falls. Until this morning we weren't sure whether we'd be going in a car or on our motorcycles. It had been raining (a bunch) for the last couple of weeks and we'd decided if rain was in the cards for Saturday or Sunday that we'd go in a car. Chris and I met Carl and Marge at their house in western Shawnee and, at about 8:40, we rode off to Cottonwood Falls. We saw high water where ever there was a river, stream, pond or lake. Shortly before 11:00 we arrived, hooked up with our cousins and photographed the historic Chase County Courthouse.
The Cottonwood River, on the north side of town, was also very high. Where the rapids start (see picture below) is where the falls should have been.
After shooting the bull with the cousins (including a pic on the bridge over the river)
and lunch downtown we went to El Dorado, KS to visit the cemetery where our aunt and uncle are buried. Highway 177 through the Flint Hills to Cassoday, KS is a pretty ride. After the cemetery we hit a Braum's for an ice cream treat.
Our lodging for the night was a rental house in Cottonwood Falls, called Aunt Kate's Cottage.
The cousins brought over pizza makings and made a boat load of homemade pizza for dinner. It was a very enjoyable evening.
We rode 235 miles today and the high temperature was 79.
Sunday; May 29
Another beautiful day! We enjoyed a relaxing morning drinking coffee (I enjoyed my first cup on the front porch), eating a little breakfast and chatting with Carl and Marge. Then we met our cousins, who prepared some homemade orange rolls and sausage for us. They both went well with the lively and enlightening discussion.
We checked the river one more time (it was still high) and a little before noon we started for home.
After a LARRAPIN good buffet lunch at the historic Hays House Restaurant in Council Grove
we rode through the Flint Hills (Alta Vista, past Lake Wabaunsee, and Eskridge) to home, where we arrived before 4:00.
We rode 164 miles today and the high temperature was a steamy 86.
