California Trip; Days 4 and 5
On Monday, June 14, we departed Delta, UT at 7:00 am under blue clear skies with a temperature of 46. We immediately knocked of 157 miles non-stop to Ely, NV. In Ely we gassed up and Carl bought a $35 rock for Marge. It was worth it, though, because it had an ancient Native American carving on it.
We continued west on Hwy 50. This section of the highway is identified on the map as the Lonliest Road. We gassed up again in Eureka, NV because we had no idea how far it would be to the next gas station. Just east of Austin, NV we saw the immediate aftermath of what appeared to be a one bike motorcycle accident (police car, bike in the ditch and guy laying on the road). I hate seeing that. In Austin we stopped for a picnic lunch.
At the intersection of Hwy 50 and Hwy 361 we stopped for gas at a very rustic one pump gas station. There was also a motel (perfect for Mel) and bar and grill on site. Quite impressive?
We spent the night in Lee Vining, CA located on the east side of Yosemite National Park. The only lodging we could find was a 3 bedroom 2 bath “cabin” (actually a double wide trailer) that was part of Lake View Lodge. It was very nice and suited us well. It provided a convenient location for another game of Farkle (Larry reached 10,000 points first but Gary won on his last roll).
We rode 535 miles today. Temperatures ranged from 46 to the low 90’s.
On Tuesday, June 15, we departed Lee Vining at 7:40 am under clear blue skies with a temperature of 55. A very short distance south of Lee Vining we entered Yosemite National Park on Hwy 120, also called Tioga Pass Road. Yosemite was beautiful but very crowded. We also had three delays for road construction inside the park.
We rode south from Yosemite on Hwy 41 to Fresno, CA where we spent the night in a Super 8. We had dinner at a nearby Greek restaurant called Falafel Express. It was a one-man operation and the food was GREAT.
We rode 205 miles today with a low temperature of 46 and a high of 90.
