Northward Ho; Day 9; June 18, 2011
I forgot to mention something in yesterday’s post. While Chris and I were doing laundry a young chunky boy and his mother came into the laundry mat. He could tell I was the rider of the motorcycle outside by my clothes – I guess. He told me, “that scooter outside sure is nifty.” I found this humorous because nifty is an unusual word to be used by a young boy these days.
We departed our motel in Hungry Horse, MT at 9:30 am. It was 50 degrees and raining lightly. We rode Hwy 2 east and in short time the temp dropped to 46. It rained off and on until we arrived at East Glacier Park, MT, where we gassed up.The weather here was much improved with cloudy to partly cloudy skies, no rain, and temps in the 50’s.
We rode north on Hwy 49 to an entrance to Glacier National Park (GNP). We then rode into the park a short distance and walked to Running Eagle Falls. It was a pretty area.
We continued north on Hwy 49 and Carl realized he had a problem with his trailer tires rubbing in the wheel wells of his trailer. We stopped at the junction of Hwys 49 and 89 to remove the trailer wheels and make the adjustment to the shocks. We were thankful for Mel’s mechanical skills.
We continued on to St. Mary, MT and rode into the east entrance of the Going-to-the-Sun-Road of GNP. The scenery was fantastic. We were quite thankful for the improved weather.
We left GNP south on Hwy 89 to Browning, MT. As we arrived at the western edge of the town my 2002 Honda Goldwing rolled over 100,000 miles. This is my first motorcycle to reach that milestone. It represents a whole lot of fun in the saddle!
From Browning we rode east on Hwy 2 to Shelby, MT where we bunked down in the Crossroads Inn.
We rode 230 miles today and enjoyed some of the best scenery in the whole country. The high temperature today was 66. For more pictures from today, click on the following link: https://picasaweb.google.com/goldwinger.shawnee/NorthwardHoDay9061811?feat=directlink
