Key West; Day 7; 4/3/14

Mel had a good time snorkeling last night. See the end of my Day 6 entry for more information and a link to a few of their pictures.

We rode out of Key West at 9:00 under blue clear skies with a temperature of 77. It was beautiful. We rode Hwy 1 back to north and it was a little quicker than the ride down.

arrived in Florida City, FL128 miles later (around noon) we arrived at a nice flat Super 8 Motel in Florida City, FL where we were able to check in, unload our stuff and drop our trailers in the parking lot. We rode a short distance up the road for lunch at the Casita Tejas Mexican Restaurant, which was very tasty.

After lunch we rode out to the Everglades National Park. On the way to the park we saw a panther crossing sign, one of many we’ve seen in the area of the Everglades.panther crossingI

We walked the short Anhinga Trail and Gumbo Limbo Trail. On the Anhinga we saw quite a few gators, birds, fish and turtles.Everglades National ParkOn the way to the Pa-hay-okee Overlook we crossed over Rock Reef Pass at a breathtaking 3 feet above sea level.Everglades National ParkAfter viewing the vast grassy swamp area from the Pa-hay-okee overlook we rode back out of the park and headed to our motel.

The route back took us past vast fields of vegetables. We followed a truck load of yellow squash and witnessed a rainbow in the irrigation spray.

We stopped at the “Robert Is Here” fruit and vegetable stand on the outskirts of Florida City.Robert Is Here fruit and vegetable stand; Florida City, FLWe all scored on some fresh veggies and fruit (Mel scored a water melon) but the real treat was a Key Lime milkshake. It was double D-LISH-US! They make all sorts of fresh fruit milkshakes. A young woman named Rebecca, who was standing in line with Trisha and I, found out it was our first experience with the fruit shakes and insisted she buy ours. She said she’d been going here since she was a youngster.

Back at the motel, Mel left to wash his rig at a car wash and Chris and I went to a nearby coin laundry to do some wash. After a dip in the pool we called it a night.

We rode 180 miles today with a high temperature of 82.
