Arizona Trip; Day 1 (Shawnee to Liberal)

Today was departure day. It is the beginning of Spring break for our sister-in-law, Marge, so we (Chris, Marge, Carl and I) are off on a trip to Arizona. Carl and Marge are on their Honda Goldwing and Chris and I are piloting our Ford Mustang. We left Carl and Marge's home at 9:15. It was 45 degrees and sunny.

We rode/drove southbound on I-35 through Emporia to the Matfield Green Service Area on the turnpike, where we took a break and refueled. It was 66 degrees so the top went down on the Mustang. We exited I-35 at Cassoday and went straight west to Newton.

After gassing up in Newton we decided to eat lunch. In checking for potential dining spots we found out that Charlie's Restaurant was nearby. As you can see, it wasn't what you'd call fine dining, but the food was good.

We continued westbound to just west of Hutchinson, where we turned southwest to Pratt. It was sweet cruising with the top down.

Our next stop was in Greensburg, KS. After refueling we checked out the world's biggest hand-dug well. We'd been there before but not since they enclosed the well in a nice museum. Greensburg is also the place where, on May 4, 2007, an F5 tornado destroyed 95% of the town. The Big Well Museum also had exhibits related to the tornado. The museum was completed 6 years ago.

It was nonstop the rest of the way to Liberal, KS, where we stopped for the day. Our route today covered 408 miles and our high temperature was 74 degrees.
