Pacific Northwest II; Day 2

We drove 473 miles from Kearney, NE to Rawlins, WY on I-80. It was cloudy and in the low 40's when we left. Temperatures dropped to a low of 32 and rose to a high of 50 along the way. We experienced brief sunshine, clouds and snow.

Along the way we ate lunch in Sidney, NE and we made two tourist stops. The first was at the Golden Spike Tower and visitor center (GoldenSpikeTower), which overlooks the Union Pacific's Bailey Rail Yard, the largest in the world. Bailey Yard is 8 miles long and covers 2,850 acres. It is a 24-7 365 days per year operation. Many trains come through each day, including 35 coal trains headed east and 35 empty coal trains headed back west

Our second stop was in Cheyenne, WY to check out the capitol square. We were here last year and it was under construction and/or rehabilitation. We were surprised to find out it still is today.

As we headed to higher elevation west of Laramie, WY we ran into several snow showers and the temperature dropped to 32. The roads were only wet, however, so all was good. The only issue was with our new Honda Accord and the adaptive cruise control. It uses radar to detect cars ahead. It became partially covered with ice and quit working. A message on the dash told me what the problem was. A quick stop to wipe the ice off cured the problem.
