Colorado; Mountains & Aspen; Day 7
One of the downsides of renting a cabin (log house) in the boonies is dealing with critters that make their way into said log house. Early on we realized we were sharing the place with mice. It became crystal clear when, on our first morning, we found they got into food left on the counter. Mel set some traps and started killing the little SOB's. Here are two found this morning.
Our crew drove away from the cabin today at about 8:30 enroute to Breckenridge. Our route took us through Fairplay and Alma. Most of the aspens we saw along the way had lost their leaves but there were plenty of mountain vistas to enjoy. The photo below was taken as we drove through Alma.
Breckenridge wasn't very busy so we were able to find a place to park with no problem and when we went to the pay station we found out it was free parking for the day. We visited a small museum and shopped around town a bit before having lunch at Eric's in the basement. After lunch we noticed a significant amount of smoke in town. We could see it and smell it. Below is a photo taken when we arrived in Breckenridge and one taken after lunch.
Our next destination was a place between Turquoise Lake and Leadville, where I thought I'd found the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Yesterday Moyer and I were looking at paper maps and Google maps trying to determine where the river started. Google maps showed a place where Tennessee Creek joins the East Fork of the Arkansas River and downstream it was labeled as the Arkansas River. If you can trust Google maps, that appeared to be the start of the Arkansas. I pinned a spot on a road closest to this location and followed Google maps to that spot hoping to arrive and walk to the headwaters. We couldn't make it because the spot was on a long private road or driveway.
But we did park on county road 9 where Tennessee Creek passed under and I got a photo of that.
Moyer, Mel and their ladies drove up to explore Turquoise Lake while Chris and I made our way back to Buena Vista. In Buena we stopped at a shop where Chris bought a small wooden bear that will adorn the front porch of our house. Before we left, Moyer, Mel and their ladies arrived at the same shop.
Back at the cabin we had a little dinner and played some cards before calling it a night. We also read that Breckenridge was being threatened by a wild fire and residents were warned to prepare for evacuation.
