We departed Sioux Falls, SD at 8:15 am in light rain. It was 61 degrees. The good news was that the rain stopped after 30 miles and the sun started to appear after 50. We rode north on I-29 stopping for fuel in Watertown, ND. This part of North Dakota was every bit as flat as western Kansas.
In Fargo, ND we gassed up again before eating lunch at a Country Kitchen. The people there were very friendly and the food was good. We then rode east on Hwy 10 through the heart of Fargo and Moorhead, MN. If you find yourself in the Fargo/Moorhead area I’d recommend avoiding that route. We saw no signs of the heavy flooding that occurred in Fargo last spring.
Hwy 10 took us to Hwy 32 north to Hwy 113 east to 71 north to Itasca State Park, which includes the headwaters of the Mississippi. The last 10 to 15 miles of Hwy 113 included twisties in the forest. It was a welcome change from the gun barrel roads we’d been riding on. The park was beautiful as you can see from the many photos. Some of the trees were already starting to change into their fall colors. Gary enjoyed nature’s splendor!
From Itasca State Park we traveled to Bemidji, MN on Hwy’s 200, 71 and 197. We holed up in the Best Western Bemidji Inn. We are still trying to teach Mel how to pronounce Bemidji.
It was a great day of riding with a high temperature of 77. We covered 420 miles. For today’s photos click on the following link: http://picasaweb.google.com/goldwinger.shawnee/NorthDakotaMinnesotaDay2?feat=directlink
