Carlsbad Caverns Ride; Day 2; April 17th
The Greensburg Inn did not provide a complimentary continental breakfast so we made do with food from our cooler. We then departed Greensburg, KS at 9:30 am. It was 55 degrees and partly sunny.
We rode south on Hwy 183, which turned into Hwy 1 and took us into Oklahoma, where the road became Hwy 34. We turned west on Hwy 64 and rode into Buffalo, OK. A cool looking sign at the edge of town inspired us to stop and take a photo. The photo is taken in honor of my father, Bob, who is also known as Buffalo Bob or just Buff. We gassed up in Buffalo and then Chris posed in front of Buffalo’s modest city hall building for another picture.
Just before reaching the pan handle of Oklahoma we turned south on Hwy 283. In Shattuck we saw a cool looking Windmill Park.
Just south of Shattuck we turned west onto Hwy 60. This highway took us into Texas. Just across the state line we came across a modest looking café associated with an even more modest looking motel in Higgins, TX. The sign outside said it was the Golden Spread Motel and Café but a more temporary and recent looking sign identified the Café as the West of the Line Café. There were a number of cars parked around and it was lunch time so we gave it a try. They offered a lunch buffet of chicken wings (not spicy), meat loaf, salad, green beans, mashed taters, and cake. We ate on styrofoam plates but the food was larrapin good. After watching me gorge myself, Chris told me I have the will power and self restraint of a piss-ant. She’s probably right. No more buffets on this trip.
When leaving Higgins we spotted RB’s used car lot. I didn’t know brother Carl was moonlighting with a second business!
After riding through Canadian and Pampa we turned south in Panhandle on Hwy 207, which took us to Interstate 40. We rode I-40 west to Amarillo and took I-27 south to Plainview. The temperature reached 90 and it was very dry, windy and dusty which made it look hazy.
We stopped for the night at a Holiday Inn Express in Plainview, TX. We rode 370 miles.
