Carlsbad Caverns Ride; Day 8; April 23rd
We left our motel in Trinidad, CO at 8:00 am. It was cloudy and 43 degrees. We rode 125 miles non-stop to Springfield, CO where we gassed up and took a break. From Trinidad, CO to Kim, CO (65 miles +) we only saw 6 other vehicles.
We then rode 160 miles non-stop to Dodge City, KS via Hwy 160, 144, and 56. In Dodge we had lunch at Wendy’s. The bowl of Chili tasted real good. While eating lunch we learned that Granddaughter Jenna scored a hat trick in her soccer game today. Way to go Jenna!
Just north and east of Dodge on Hwy 56 we rode past a wind farm near Spearville, KS.
We continued east and north on Hwy 56 to Larned, KS. When leaving Larned I noticed the front wheel/tire was not handling well. I checked the air pressure and found it to be extremely low. I checked for punctures and found none. I aired up the tire and headed for Great Bend where I checked air pressure again. It was low again. Inspection reveled that the rubber at the base of the valve stem was cracked and leaking air.
Chris checked the phone book and found a Honda dealership. It was after 5:00 pm but I called anyway. As I expected, they were closed and were not scheduled to open again until Tuesday the 26th. Their answering machine, however, said if I needed anything to leave a message. They were in and out of the shop and would call back if they could. An hour later Ted, from Great Bend Honda Kawasaki, called. By then we had checked into the Comfort Inn motel. Ted’s wife drove him to our motel. He drove my motorcycle to his shop and said he’d take care of the valve stem. He dropped it back off at 10:15 pm. with a new valve stem. What a dealership!!!!!
While swimming in the motel pool we got a phone call from our son, Bryan, offering to let us see Grandson Jack tomorrow. We hope that works out!
We rode 370 miles today and the motorcycle rolled over 96,000 miles. The high temperature today was 57.
