Nebraska Border and Back
It was beautiful today and we had a free afternoon so Chris and I decided to ride north for a DQ treat – a late lunch dessert that would also serve as our dinner.
We took off north on I-435 across the Kansas River and the Missouri River into Missouri. After exiting at Hwy 45 we continued north through Farley into the Missouri River valley. The river was west of us and out of sight but the reason for the ride were the tree covered bluffs bordering the valley on the east. We were checking to see if autumn colors were making their debut.
The color change had begun but our camera did not capture some of the color perceived by our eyes so we deleted several pictures after we arrived home.
At Weston Bend State Park we took a detour into the park to check out the scenic outlookand then continued northbound through Weston, MO.
At Hwy 59 we turned west, rode the short distance to the Missouri River and crossed the bridge into Atchison, KS. The bridge was rough and bumpy but a new bridge is under construction so it won’t be long before the bumpy bridge is gone.
With 60 miles on the trip meter I parked the Goldwing near the river and Chris and I took a short scenic walk. I love to be near rivers.
From Atchison we rode north on K-7 Hwy through White Cloud to the Kansas-Nebraska border. White Cloud is right on the river and I love the ride north to Nebraska, even though it is very short.
We looked for a “Welcome to Nebraska” sign to photograph but, finding none, we did a u-turn and returned to Atchison, where we stopped for our DQ treat.
With some scrumptious ice cream in our bellies we rode south on K-7 to Leavenworth, past the Federal Penitentiary, to Hwy 5 on the north end of Lansing. We’ve ridden Hwy 5 between Lansing and I-435 on numerous occasions and, as every time before, we enjoyed it.
On our route home we rode a pretty tree lined road near Lake Quivira. With 190 miles under our belts we arrived home just before dark. It was a nice afternoon ride with my girlfriend.
