Pacific Northwest; Day 8
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Rosie, Chris' mother. She is ?? years young today. We hope your day was great!
It was cloudy again this morning, almost like fog. It was 53 degrees when we departed Ocean Shores, WA at 9:20 and headed north on 101. About 25 miles up the road the sun peaked out and before the day was over it was sunny. Most of 101 was not along the shore of the Pacific but there was a stretch where we could see the ocean through the forest and a couple of times we had a clear view.
Chris did a little shopping at a variety store in Forks, WA and then we continued on. Our final destination was Sequim, WA. We had a bit of a problem, however, at Lake Crescent. Hwy 101 was completely blocked for road work. Evidently, we missed warning signs along the way. After a picnic lunch on the shore of Lake Crescent, we had to back-track 22 miles to catch Hwy 113 north and Hwy 112 west where we eventually hooked back into Hwy 101. The bad news is we drove an extra 50 miles. The good news is we got to see Lake Crescent. Actually we intended to see Marymere Falls also, just south of Lake Crescent, but it was an hour and a half walk. Since we had to make the detour we decided not to do the hike so we would not be stopping as late as we did the day before.
Our route today took us around the Olympic National Park and the Olympic Mountains. I hoped to see some more snow capped peaks but only twice I caught a very brief glimpse.
We arrived in Sequim around 4:30. After dropping Chris and our luggage off at the motel I took the car to Jiffy Lube for an overdue oil change. We had a good dinner at the Oasis before calling it a day. Tomorrow we plan to take the ferry from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, British Columbia to see Butchart Gardens (butchartgardens.com).
We drove 252 miles today and saw a high temperature of 76. To see the five photos taken today click on this link - Day 8 Photos
