Kansas Waterfall Tour; Day 3

This was the final day of our Kansas waterfall tour. Our one and only waterfall would be Elk Falls. We departed Coffeyville at 9:00. It was cloudy and 49 degrees. Our route to Elk Falls was 169 northbound and 160 westbound.

It was a sunny 45 degrees upon our arrival. Besides the waterfall, Elk Falls is known as the world's largest living ghost town (GhostTown) and the outhouse capital of the world (Outhouse). You will see why when you view today's photos.

Viewing and photographing Elk Falls (the waterfall) was quite enjoyable. I was able to take some photos from a pedestrian bridge and then we could go down to the bank of the Elk River for closer photos.

The iron truss bridge was originally built in 1893 and it was used for horse/auto traffic. After a flood in 1976, when most of the wooden planks making up the bridge were washed away, the bridge was no longer used. In 1983 the bridge was made usable for pedestrian traffic. In 1992 it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

From Elk Falls we drove a short distance to the intersection with Highway 99. The section of Highway 160 from Independence to Highway 99 (through Elk City and Elk Falls) was a very enjoyable drive with hills and curves through some beautiful Kansas scenery. I highly recommend it for motorcycles and cars alike.

Highway 99 took us north to Olpie, KS, where enjoyed a larrapin good fried chicken lunch at the Chicken House.
We noticed that an 8 ounce filet mignon could be had for under $15. I may have to try it some time. The fried chicken is so good, though, it is hard to pass up.

Continuing north on 99 to Emporia we caught I-35 northbound headed for home. Along the way we stopped at Beto Junction, where Chris purchased a Kansas shot glass to hold shells and a small rock she picked up at the waterfalls we visited.

We drove 250 miles today under both cloudy and sunny skies. Our high temperature was 57 degrees and that was at home.

Another great trip in the books! Our total mileage was 749 miles.
