Texas 2015; Day 3
Today was quite a day. We left our motel in Tyler, TX at 7:40. It was 79 degrees. We rode indirectly to the Tyler Rose Garden. It was a very nice place but the roses were not as spectacular as normal due to recent heavy rain storms.Chris and Marge wanted to visit the gift shop inside the Tyler Rose Center . . . . . but it was closed. Darned the bad luck.
For pictures of some roses that caught Chris’ eye click on the following link: https://plus.google.com/photos/104542123131082631220/albums/6158205695504074833?authkey=COnUkIj4_ricRg
The next stop on our tour was the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site located just west of Alto, TX. The Caddo peoples moved into this area around 1,300 years ago and the height of their civilization was around A.D. 1100. They abandoned this site around A.D. 1300. The mounds are burial and ceremonial sites. There are three at this location and the following picture is of the biggest.(The mounds on her chest are much more interesting!!!!!!) We wanted to check out the Caddo Mounds visitor center . . . . . . . but it was closed.
Then we were off to Nacogdoches, the oldest city in Texas. We checked out the visitor center (which was open) and had lunch at Dolli’s Diner on the square. Pretty good eats.
From Nacogdoches we rode south to Lufkin and then southeast through Huntington and Zavalla. About two miles past Zavalla Carl heard a thump thump thump and then the rear of his motorcycle started to shift back and forth making his trailer do the same. He was able to get stopped safely on the shoulder where we found he had a flat tire. We could not find anything in the tire so we don’t know for sure what caused it.This was in the middle of nowhere though there was quite a bit of traffic. This highway was a two-laner with a 75 mph speed limit so cars and trucks were zipping right by us. Fortunately we had cell phone service. Carl made arrangements for a tow, we acquired motel rooms back in Lufkin and about three hours later Carl’s tow truck arrived. Bugs and mosquitos were thick and Carl had many bloody bites on his exposed arms. He seemed to attract them. We are counting on a Honda dealer in Lufkin to fix it all up tomorrow.
I rode 236 miles today but I made an extra round trip from Lufkin to the location of the flat tire. The high temperature was a steamy 93, as far as I knew. I did not check the temperature while dealing with the flat tire situation.
