Wild Bill's Two-Wheeled Adventure; Day 3
We awoke to another beautiful day for riding. I snapped the following pic as we were preparing to take off for the day.
It was shortly after 8:00 when we finished breakfast and hit the highway. It was 63 degrees and you can see we had blue clear skies.
Wild Bill led us north to I-90 where we took off westbound, destination Devil's Tower National Monument. The interstate took us into Wyoming and at Sundance we exited on Highway 14, which took us north to Devil's Tower. It is quite a sight.
There is a mile long paved trail around Devil's Tower but I had little hope of anybody wanting to walk it. The motto of some of our group has been, "we're bikers, not hikers." Bruce, however, said he wanted to do it and I was surprised when everybody except Gary and Bill went along. I got some good pics along the way.
The highway 14 loop took us west and south back to I-90 and we rode into Gillette, WY for lunch at at Village Inn.
From Gillette we took Highway 14 north and west on a long desolate 100 mile course to Sheridan. Before leaving, however, Bill was concerned because he was hearing a noise in the front end of his motorcycle. We all stopped and Bill and Gary checked it out. Finding nothing obvious we rode on to Sheridan.
At Sheridan we hopped back on 90 and road north and west to Ranchester, WY. When gassing up there Bill noticed that a mounting bolt for one of his front brake calipers was gone. Following some work and phone calls Bill found a bolt that would work temporarily and we all rode south to Sheridan and a Honda dealer. They did not have the exact correct bolt but they had one that would work and Bill was ready to roll again.
Bill's original plan was to make it to Red Lodge, MT today but, due to the delay, he decided we'd call it a night in Sheridan. We found lodging at the Holiday Lodge, our first "Mel Motel" of the trip. It was just dandy.
We saw a butt load of prong horn antelope today. I'd estimate that I saw at least 100 of them at various places but most were along Highway 14 from Gillette to Sheridan.
I also saw three deer and a lot of prairie dogs.
It was a great ride today through some pretty country and I'm glad Bill's missing bolt problem was solved easily. We rode 283 miles and our high temperature was in the low 80's somewhere.
