Big Sky Tour; Day 10
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Marge! I won't say how old she is but it's younger than me. 😘
At 8:00 we left our hotel in Williston, ND and traveled south on Hwy 85. It was sunny (again) and 55 degrees (top up). When we arrived at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP), north unit, it was 61 degrees so the top went down to cruise through the park. We enjoyed the scenery and we had to be careful with all the bison wandering around.
I was stopped on the road trying to photograph a baby bison when it took off running away from its mother onto the road right in front of us. Then it ran back towards the car hopping around like it wanted to play. Mother bison was about 50 feet away and when we heard her starting to snort behind us we took off.
When we were approaching the Oxbow Overlook, the end of the line, we encountered another herd of bison on the road. We stopped to watch. The whole time we were there a big one stood in the road seeming to stare at us. Others wandered across the road and some started wandering in our direction. Carl and Marge, who were ahead of us on the motorcycle, turned around so they could leave in a hurry. As we were sitting there watching, an older man in a small red car drove past us and slowly started moving into the herd.
As he moved slowing along a big bison walked behind him so he was hemmed in.
It looked a little dicey to me and some of the bison started to move but we left before we knew if he made it through or not. I would not have risked the Mustang to make that maneuver. It would have been cool to see a bison ram the car. Anyway we did not make it to the Oxbow overlook.
We continued south on 85 to I-94 west to the TRNP South Unit. We stopped at the Painted Canyon overlook - NOT impressed.
After lunch in Medora, ND we drove into the TRNP South Unit. After seeing some more bison and some prairie dogs we decided it looked much like the North Unit so we left and headed south on 85 to Spearfish, SD where we called it a day at 5:00.
Our travels covered 380 miles and the high temperature encountered was 86. Another beautiful day.

I had to do some editing to make it look this "painted". Not much color. |
