Big Sky Tour; Day 2
As we departed our hotel in McCook, NE at 8:30 it was sunny and 72 degrees. We drove west on Hwy 34 to the Massacre Canyon State Historic Site. This was near the site of the last battle between the Sioux Nation and the Pawnee Nation. There are two faces on opposite sides of the monument. I assume one represents the Sioux and one the Pawnee.
We continued west on 34 to Trenton, where we turned north on Hwy 25. At Hwy 6 we were westbound again. A construction zone at Paradise, NE slowed us down a bit but we eventually made it to Imperial, where we turned southwest on S15A, which took us a short distance to Champion, NE. We spent some time here lollygagging around Champion Lake and the Champion Mill (which was not open - thanks to COVID-19).
Hwy 6 took us further west into Colorado where we stopped for lunch in Sterling at the J&L Cafe. From Sterling, Hwy 14 took us west all the way to Fort Collins, where we stopped for the day. We saw rain clouds south and north but we stayed hot and dry. It was also windy and at times we experienced tumble weeds blowing across the highway and into the path of our car. At times we could see prairie dogs along the highway. I expected to see some pronghorn antelope but never did.
It was nice when we got to within 40 miles of Fort Collins and we could see mountains on the horizon. I love the mountains. Our travels today took us 271 miles. The highest temperature we saw on the car's thermometer was 106 degrees.
