Northern Wanderings; Day 1

Chris and I are off on another road trip, headed north for cooler weather. Our destinations include Michigan and northern Minnesota. As luck would have it, the rain stopped just before we left home at 7:45 so streets were wet and Poonie got dirty.

Our plan was to go north on I-35 out of Kansas City, east on 116 to Braymer, MO, north to 36, east to 24 and east all the way to Peoria, IL. At the last minute we decided to make a route change. Instead of crossing the Mississippi River from Missouri into Quincy, IL we went north on 61 to Canton, MO, the home of Culver-Stockton College. When I was a freshman in college attending Tarkio College I remember Culver-Stockton being one of the colleges that Tarkio competed against.

After a LARRAPIN good buffet lunch of fried chicken, lasagna and many other gastronomical delights at the Saints Avenue Cafe we toured the campus of Culver-Stockton College. This college was founded in 1853, 100 years before we were born.

From the college we drove through downtown Canton to the Mississippi River, where we saw Lock and Dam 20. A tug boat was pushing some barges out of the lock and up the river.

From Canton we drove north on 61 to 136 east into Illinois, to 67 north, and 116 east into Peoria, our destination for the day. We drove 399 miles and although it was mostly cloudy all day the high temperature was 81. We were top down most of the day. The top went up just before we reached Peoria due to some light rain.
