Northern Wanderings; Days 12 & 13

On Day 12 (8/28/19) we hung around with Deb, Tim, Myrna and their family. That evening we all celebrated Timmie's 48th birthday with some LARRAPIN good chow. We drove zero miles today.

Day 13 (8/29/19) we were back on the road. After saying our goodbyes, we took off west on county road J62, north on 218, west on 2 and north on 1 to Keosauqua, IA. Chris' grandparents, on both sides of her family, are buried here and she wanted to do some cleanup on one of the headstones. It started raining well before we reached Keosauqua and it was still raining while we did our cleaning. Before leaving town we enjoyed an ice cream treat from world famous Misty's.

We left Keosauqua southbound on Hwy 1, west on 2 (where the rain came down extremely hard), and south on 15 to Memphis, MO. My intention was to take 136 west all the way to Bethany but west of Lancaster, signs indicated that 136 was closed to through traffic. The detour sent us south on 63 so we decided to take 63 all the way to Macon. South of Kirksville it stopped raining and the highway was dry. In Macon we stopped for lunch at Ashley's Apple Basket Cafe.  We've eaten here before and we enjoyed our meals again today. Chris had the special of the day, meatloaf. I had fried chicken livers.

Before we finished eating it started raining - hard and with some small hail. The cafe is located at a low spot in the road and water was accumulating on the street. Chris took this pic through a window with her iPhone and it is hard to tell, but you can see how high the water is on the wheel of this truck.

I got wet running to the car and even though I parked as close as I could to the cafe door, Chris stepped in water over her shoes getting to the car.

After that, Chris wanted to shop at a Ben Franklin store up the street from the cafe. I parked right next to the front of the store and waited in the car while she did her shopping.

I rolled down my driver side window and got wet for this pic.

From Macon, we drove west on 36 to I-35 south to the Kansas City area. By the time we left Macon the rain stopped and we were high and dry the rest of the way home. But it did get hot. The car showed a high temp of 94. No top-down today due to rain followed by high temperatures.

We arrived home at 5:10 after having traveled 315 miles.

It was a fantastic trip that covered 2280 miles.
