Northeastern U.S.A. - Day 15
Carl and Marge decided that today they would ride all the way home via I-70. Chris and I wanted another day of back road travels so we parted company. We left our hotel at 7:50 AM under sunny skies with a temperature of 70. The top was down.
Our route took us north out of Effingham, IL on Highway 33. This gem was sitting by the road in Beecher City, IL.
Then it was 128 north. At Cowden, IL we saw a sign for the Thompson Mill Covered Bridge. After much driving on bumpy back roads, some with gravel, we finally found it. The bridge was not well maintained and the entrance was blocked with plastic barricade fence.
Our route from Cowden was 128 north; 16 west to Pana; 29 north and west; County 12 west; County 1 north; County 10 west through Morrisonville; Black Diamond Trail north; Mine Avenue west through Farmersville to Girard, IL and then Sunset Lake on Emmerson Airline (a road). At Sunset Lake we checked out the former Ewing residence.
We continued west on Emmerson Airline to Palmyra and took 111 north to Modesto, IL, where we enjoyed a great lunch at Linda Lou's.
After lunch we drove back south on 111 past Palmyra; 108 west through Carrollton to Eldred, IL; Hillview-Eldred Road south; 16/100 north and west across the Illinois River
to Kampsville; 100 north; 96 west then north to Atlas, 54 west across the Mississippi River into Louisiana, MO,
54 west; 154 west; 24 southwest to Moberly, where we stopped for the day. At 2:30 PM we were in Curryville, MO on 154. It was still sunny and 84 degrees so we decided to put the top up and turn on the AC to protect us from the sun.
East of Moberly we stopped to check out the Union Covered Bridge State Historic Site. This bridge was much better maintained than the Thompson Mill Bridge and the roads to access it were much better.
After checking into our hotel we walked next door to an Arby's, where we enjoyed an orange creme milkshake that went well with our popcorn for dinner.
Our travels today covered 310 miles and our high temperature was 86. Tomorrow we go home.
