Northeastern U.S.A. - Day 2
The weather did not look promising when I looked out our hotel window this morning. It was cloudy and foggy, looked as though it could rain at any time. But it didn't!
We departed our hotel in Salem, IN at 8:20. It was cloudy and 71 degrees. It was another Highway 50 (eastbound) day until we neared Cincinnati, OH.
As we approached Vincennes, IN and the Wabash River (which is the boundary between Illinois and Indiana) we took 33 south to the Lincoln Trail State Memorial. There was a sculpture commemorating Abe Lincoln's first entrance into Illinois. At that time, Abe was a destitute 21 year old frontiersman.
I walked to the middle of the bridge over the Wabash River and snapped a couple photos of the river and a round building on the grounds of the George Rogers Clark National Historic Park. This park is believed to be the original site of Fort Sackville. In doing some research (Google) I learned that George Rogers Clark was a historic Revolutionary War commander who led a small force of frontiersmen through freezing Illinois country to capture British-held Fort Sackville at Vincennes, IN during February of 1779. We did not stop to visit the park.
After gassing up in Vincennes, IN we drove by 1629 Hart in Vincennes to get a photo of the giant Uncle Sam.
Two interesting factoids about Vincennes, IN. Number one is it's age - established in 1732. Number two - it was the birthplace of Red Skelton and there is a Red Skelton Museum here, which we did not visit.
Highway 50 between Loogootee, IN and Bedford, IN was a very pretty drive with forest, hills and sweeping turns. The only complaint was the slow speed limit (50 mph in many places) and the slow Indiana drivers.
At Seymour, IN we stopped at Larrison's Diner for lunch. We enjoyed some pork tenderloin sandwiches, except for Marge, who had a BLT.
As we approached the Indiana-Ohio border we left Hwy 50 and turned south and east on I-275, which took us south into Kentucky, east around Cincinnati and back north into Ohio. Hwy 32 took us east to Seaman, OH where we stopped for the day at 5:30.
We traveled 327 miles today. The high temperature was 87 but it was 79 when we stopped in Seaman, OH.
