Pacific Northwest II; Day 3

Image
Today was a scenic 283 mile Wyoming drive from Rawlins to Jackson. It was a chilly fifteen degrees when we woke up and it was still below twenty when we left. Before departing Rawlins, however, we stopped by the the Wyoming Frontier Prison & Museum ( OldPrison ). It was not open for tours but I was able to take some photos of the outside. I think a tour would have been very interesting. We stopped for lunch in Pinedale at the Wrangler Cafe. They served up a LARRAPIN good patty melt and fries. We made it healthy with a trip to the salad bar. West and north of Pinedale we stopped for some photos of the Wind River Mountain Range. As we neared Jackson it became cloudy and even started to snow a bit. We're hoping it doesn't snow so much that the roads in Yellowstone National Park are closed because that is our destination for tomorrow. We drove 473 miles from Kearney, NE to Rawlins, WY on I-80. It was cloudy and in the low 40's when we left. Temperatures dropped to a low of 32 and rose to a high of 50 along the way. We experienced brief sunshine, clouds and snow. Along the way we ate lunch in Sidney, NE and we made two tourist stops. The first was at the Golden Spike Tower and visitor center ( GoldenSpikeTower ), which overlooks the Union Pacific's Bailey Rail Yard, the largest in the world. Bailey Yard is 8 miles long and covers 2,850 acres. It is a 24-7 365 days per year operation. Many trains come through each day, including 35 coal trains headed east and 35 empty coal trains headed back west Our second stop was in Cheyenne, WY to check out the capitol square. We were here last year and it was under construction and/or rehabilitation. We were surprised to find out it still is today. As we headed to higher elevation west of Laramie, WY we ran into several snow showers and the temperature dropped

Last year Chris and I made a trip to the Pacific Northwest. We had a great time but were unable to see some of the sites because of forest fires. Now we're headed back for a second try. The plan is to hit Yellowstone National Park on the way. Today we left Overland Park, KS at 10:45 after Chris' hair appointment. We drove 333 miles to Kearney, NE. Along the way we had lunch at the Cracker Barrel in St. Joe, MO and we stopped to walk around the state capitol in Lincoln, NE. catholic church across the street from the Nebraska capitol building across the street from the Nebraska capitol To see all the photos taken today click on the following link:  Day 1 Pics The high temperature today was 71 degrees.
