North Carolina - Day 7; July 15, 2009

Our sister-in-law turned 50 today. Congratulations Marge!

We departed Ron and Cindy’s at 9:00 AM in 68 degree mostly sunny weather and headed to Dupont State Forest westbound on Kanuga and Crab Creek Roads. We arrived at Dupont State Forest at 9:30 AM and hiked to three different waterfalls. One of those waterfalls, Triple Falls, actually consisted of three different falls. When we arrived there were only two or three other vehicles in the gravel parking lot.

Our first walk was to Hooker Falls. I saw no explanation as to how the falls got this name but it makes me wonder. The area is beautiful. The trails are wide and easy to walk on and the forest is lush providing abundant shade.

From Hooker Falls we hiked to Triple Falls and then High Falls. The hiking was more strenuous here due to significant elevations changes. It was worth the effort however. When we arrived back at the parking lot it was crammed full of vehicles.

We rode further west on Crab Creek Road until it intersected with Hwy 64 where we continued west through Brevard and Sapphire to Cashiers, NC. In Cashiers we had lunch at Cornucopia which had outside seating under a giant roof. It was cool and pleasant and the food was good. Cornucopia had been recommended to us by Cindy.

64 took us west to Highlands, NC where we picked up Hwy 106 south and west into Georgia and Hwy 23/441 south. The ride along 64 and 106 was beautiful. The scenery was great and there were abundant twisties for motorcycling pleasure.

Hwy 23 took us to Hwy 17 west into Helen, GA. Our friends, Bill and Jamie, visited Helen previously and really enjoyed it so Chris and I decided to check it out. The downtown area was designed and built on a Bavarian theme. It is definitely a touristy type of town. After checking in at the Rodeway Inn we walked to downtown Helen where Chris shopped

and we watched tubers on the Chattahoochee River.

We only rode 130 miles today due to spending so much time hiking to waterfalls, eating lunch, and walking around Helen, GA. It was a good day. The high temperature was in the mid 80’s.

Chris called Jamie this evening to tell her we were in Helen. Jamie said that she and Bill were thinking about a 3 day weekend ride to Arkansas and wanted to know if we wanted to meet them Saturday sometime. We definitely wanted to do that and decided to make it happen.
