Roaring River Ride; Day 2

We did some hiking around Roaring River State Park (RRSP) in the morning.  We hiked the River Trail over to the hatchery and spring.  It was a cool and beautiful morning.Chris on the River Trail; Roaring River State Park (RRSP)The Roaring River spring was beautiful.  I’ve always liked to see springs – all that water pouring up out of the ground.Chris watching water fall into Roaring River SpringOn the walk to the spring there was a sign that warned of falling rocks.  We were not concerned because we see warning signs all the time.  While standing by the spring a frigging rock the size of a baseball fell into the water about three feet away from us.  Holy CRAP!

We departed Roaring River State Park at about 10:30 leaving our trailer at the lodge.  It was 68 under mostly sunny skies.  Another beautiful day!

We took County Road F east to Hwy 86 east to 23 south to Holiday Island, AR.Holiday Island, ARWe drove by a condo that Chris’ parents once owned.  Chris enjoyed spending time there with them.  Chris also had to stop at Fred’s to do some shopping.

We had lunch at Myrtie Mae’s in Eureka Springs, AR.  The food was very good, as usual.  While there, we saw brochures for Pivot Rock Park and Quigley’s Castle.  We departed Myrtie Mae’s to check them out.

Quigley’s Castle was just south of Eureka on Hwy 23.  The history of the place is interesting (go to http://www.quigleyscastle.com/).  Elise Quigley and her children demolished their house while Bud Quigley was at work one day in 1943.  He came home to find the family living in the chicken coop.  Elise did this to get Bud to build a new house, which she designed. Walls were made of Arkansas river rock.  Large windows provide light to plants that grow inside clear up to the second level of the house.  The yard is chock full of stuff made of river rock and concrete.DSCN2819It is a weird kind of place similar in a quirky way to the Garden of Eden in Lucas, Kansas.  There is a $7.00 per person entry fee.

We then visited Pivot Rock Park.Eureka Springs, ARWe hiked to see pivot rock and the natural bridge.  Fortunately the walk was not that far because this was not real impressive.  We did have a good time, however.  It cost $4.50 apiece to see them.

We returned to our lodge in RRSP by 5:30 pm.  We had a great time and rode 80 miles.  The high temp for the day was 73 and it was mostly sunny all day.
