Big Sky Tour; Day 5

Yesterday evening we walked to downtown Cody after I finished the blog for the day. There was a street performance going on and, as you can see, nobody was worrying about social distancing.

Chris and I took a walk in downtown Cody before we took off today. The main drag was rather empty this morning.

At 9:00 we left our hotel and took Hwy 120 north to Hwy 296 westbound. This is the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, named after the Chief of the Nez Perce tribe in 1877 (Chief Joseph Scenic Byway). The scenery was beautiful and an appetizer for the scenery of the Beartooth Highway yet to come. On this highway we also spotted a moose, which was quite a treat (see link to photos at the end).

At Hwy 212 (the Beartooth Highway) we turned north and headed up into the Beartooth Mountains. Along the way we stopped to check out a waterfall.

The scenery on the Beartooth Highway was breathtaking. The low temperature near the top was 53 and it seemed colder than that with the wind. We had a 20 minute stop at a construction zone but that was just an opportunity to enjoy the scenery. I wasn't real sure where Beartooth Pass was but according to an online source the elevation there is 10,948 feet. Our Garmin GPS showed our highest point to be 10,950 - pretty close. Along the way we saw a herd of mountain goats (not sure of the correct name) with folks all around taking photos. They were too far away for me to get a decent shot.

We stopped at "Top of the World" for a bathroom break before we motored on to Red Lodge, MT.
Can you spot Carl's Goldwing and my Mustang parked on opposite sides of the street here in Red Lodge?

An average lunch was had at the Red Lodge Cafe.

We concluded our day further north on 212 (and a brief stint on I-90) in Billings, MT at 3:45 PM. We only covered 174 miles today but a lot of scenery was packed into those miles. Our high temperature was 82, which was the temp when we arrived in Billings.
