Minnwichigan; Day 4; July 8, 2014

We departed Bemidji at 8:10 under cloudy skies with a temp of 61 and rolled northeast on Hwy 71 to Northome and then east on Hwy 1. (Was that a run-on sentence?)

This section of Hwy 1 was very desolate. Lots of woods, water, and critters but few humans. I’m not sure we saw even one car or person between Northome and Effie. It was a pretty and enjoyable ride. Yesterday our wildlife sightings consisted of one deer, large mosquitos and large flies. Around Northome we saw a momma deer and two fawns in a field of wild flowers off the side of the road.momma deer and her two fawns along Hwy 1Throughout the rest of the day today we would see five more separate deer. One was in the middle of the road as Carl and Marge (who were leading) rounded a curve. Carl’s riding skills enabled him to avoid a collision.

We stopped in Effie for petrol and a break. In the store Marge found a long wooden sign with a saying on it that was appropriate for her future status as a grandma (I don’t remember the exact words). Carl told her she could not get it because it would take up too much room in their trailer. She came out of the store with the sign anyway. Their banter back-and-forth was amusing.

While stopped in Effie a rain shower came through but it stopped before we continued our trek eastbound on 1. Later on down the road it was obvious rain was coming again.storm brewing down Hwy 1We stopped and put on our rain suits. It rained lightly off-and-on for awhile, which also lowered the temperature.

Just west of Effie we stopped to visit the North American Bear Center, read all about bears and saw two of their live bears.at the North American Bear Center

We ate a late lunch in Ely at the Boathouse Brew Pub. It was terrible. We waited forever for our food, we did not get what we ordered, and the food sucked. Do NOT go there.

Hwy 1 took us south from Ely to Hwy 61, which runs along the shore of Lake Superior. Shortly after 5:00 as we rode south along Hwy 61 the temperature was 55.

We visited the Split Rock Lighthouse State ParkSplit Rock Lighthousebefore stopping for the day at a motel in Two Harbors, MN, where we enjoyed the pool and hot tub before turning in.

We rode 268 miles today and our high temperature was 66. Great scenery, great company, great motorcycles, great day (except for the sucky lunch).
