Spring Break; Day 2

The weather gurus predicted a rainy morning and they were right this time. It rained during the night and while we were enjoying the complimentary hotel breakfast it was pouring rain outside. After breakfast, when the skies started to clear, the tornado sirens went off. Fortunately it was a false alarm.

The rain had stopped when we left at 9:30 and it was 54 degrees. We took off eastbound on I-40. Carl mentioned before we left that if I passed a motorcycle shop he'd like to purchase a new bike cover. A short distance down the interstate we stopped at Russellville Honda in Russellville, AR. Carl scored a bike cover and Marge scored a rain jacket.

Yesterday Carl experienced an electrical problem where the bike was telling him his left side saddlebag was open when it was really closed. He decided to have the mechanics at Russellville Honda check it out.
They determined that the switch was defective. They could replace it but that would mean over a two hour wait so they just disconnected it. Before we left they found a leak in Carl's coolant overflow tank so that was replaced too. Two hours later we were back on the road under sunny skies.

We continued east on the interstate to North Little Rock, where we enjoyed a BBQ lunch at the Whole Hog Cafe. It was LARRAPIN good and we enjoyed sampling the large variety of BBQ sauces they offered.

After lunch we visited the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site,

the Arkansas state capitol building,

statues of the Little Rock Nine (the students who integrated Little Rock Central High School) on the grounds of the capitol building,

and the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum (took a photo only - did not go inside).

We left the Little Rock area eastbound on Highway 165. Near Stuttgart, AR we took 79 north and east. Past Clarendon, AR we turned south and east on 49. Chris and I stopped at the Louisiana Purchase State Historic Park while Carl and Marge continued on to West Helena, AR to our lodging. Carl wanted to watch as much of the K-State Big 12 championship basketball game against Oklahoma as possible.

The Louisiana Purchase State Park is on a headwater swamp. A boardwalk takes you out to a stone marking the initial point from which all surveys of the property acquired through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 originated. It was interesting and quite enjoyable but there were many mosquitoes.

We traveled 230 miles today and out high temperature was 76. Chris and I put the top down in Little Rock and kept it down until we arrived at the Louisiana Purchase State Park. It was a fine day! We did see a lot of standing water today.
